Can a Plastic Surgeon be Good at Both Facial AND Body Cosmetic Surgery?
This is a question that I get asked often and the short answer is yes. It is possible not only to be competent at each of these surgeries, but to excel at them. As an experienced plastic surgeon, I do the following procedures on a regular basis: browlift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, facelift, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, tummy tuck, liposuction, and laser surgery. Each procedure has a learning curve and a degree of mastery over time. That is why you want a surgeon with a little grey hair because it takes years to become a master at each of these surgeries.
An analogy I like to use is comparing a cosmetic surgeon to a professional golfer. Do people ask if Tiger Woods is good at driving the ball, chipping AND putting? Actually, he is good at all three because he is a Pro and has put in the time over the years to excel at each of these. Each plastic surgeon should be judged on their own merits and their own degree of surgical artistry and craftsmanship. Doctors who focus on specialties such as “facial” plastic surgery do not necessarily do a better job on face lifts, eyelid surgery, or noses. What is more important is their commitment to achieving the skill set needed and level of detail. It becomes very obvious when you critically examine a plastic surgeons before and after results. Your surgeon should have a commitment to perfecting his or her craft, be extremely critical of their own work, and develop a skill set and a team that allows consistently superb results.
